Nazaré is a city in the center of Portugal and becomes very well known since Garrett Mcnamara, the surfer from California, surf the biggest wave ever and hold the record of 78 feet ( 24 meters ) wave in Nazaré.
This is a beautiful city at the coast of Portugal and with very old traditions. The city is a fishermen city and you will see many fisher boats in the beach, also many fishermen are drying the fish in the beach and the women who sell the fish have a very nice traditional their clothes are a headscarf, a embroidered apron over the 7 skirts with 7 different forms and colors.
Connecting the beach of Nazaré to the Sitio where you can see the lighthouse and also the big waves and the surfers you have a great funicular or lift which works since 1889 works with electricity and is 1,o43 feet ( 318 meters ) long and a inclination of 42%, it’s a great adventure to go up and down.
The Nazaré Canyon is a canyon under the sea and is the reason why the area have such a big waves, it’s 16,000 feet ( 5.000 meters ) depth and 140 miles ( 230 kilometers ) long. Has been study by some institutes to know a little bit more about ecosystems, sediment transport, deposition and ocean circulation.
This is one of the beaches of the center of Portugal which most baths due to the great waves and water temperatures, Nazaré beach is very touristic and also very popular in New Year’s Eve.
